We have been working so hard to get these singles out – I know we’re late – but, they’re ready now!

I’m so excited to be releasing the first single. We’ve had two projects on the go for the last 7 months: 1) songwriting for the 3rd album, and 2) songwriting for the monthly singles. Both projects were completely different; which was GREAT as it allowed all the songs to flow out of me that I felt like writing. If the tune turned out not suiting the album, it was next in line to try out for the Monthly Singles! Its been so much work, but so awesome at the same time.

Butterfly is a tune that I wrote with guitarist, Nathan Crook, about 4 years ago. He and I had talked about writing tonnes but hadn’t created anything yet. We were rehearsing for a show at my house when Nathan said he had a phrase stuck in his head… “Heartache’s just a word you can feel, confusion’s easier to get”. Well, of course I picked up my nearest journal and wrote it down… then the whole song flowed out with some killer chord progressions to accompany it. (And you can hear where Nathan’s killer line came into play) We were so excited to write our first tune together!

Over the next couple months we were able to perfect it, and performed it a few times at some local shows as a simple, acoustic number. The tune even got recorded in Winnipeg, at the studio, as a scratch idea for my first album – Journals. It didn’t make the cut, and after that it never resurfaced again… until this last February when I was back in Winnipeg writing and demoing for the 3rd album with Jordan. I was so pumped when he said he had got an idea for it, and there it was: he had created the awesome recording you hear now! It was totally different to anything we had ever created but suited the song so well!

Don’t be afraid of the new sound. All the singles are completely different to one another, so the next one (releasing July 1st), is going to be completely different again! (You might recognize that one, too) And the album is a new concept as well: allowing more acoustic instruments and a LOT of voice.

Hope you enjoy Butterfly and are getting super excited to hear all the new material to go along with the “Katherine Penfold 2011″ photoshoot and designs! (Kinda like an upgrade. hee hee. Katherine Penfold 2.0).

Katherine Penfold featuring Ariel Posen – It Was You

Its really funny how songwriting goes. For my first album, words and music flowed from me so easily, and at the end of the day I could have 3 songs completed and all worth a look at… then after Journals was done I fell into a massive writers block. It took me almost two and a half years before I was finally able to say I “wrote” a song. It was so frustrating after being through the previous experience! This song was one of my trash bin songs. I wrote a chorus hook that I thought would never come to the surface again, but, as usual, Jordan found it in my mess of ideas I brought with me to Winnipeg and really liked it. Which then brings forth the next way of writing: under pressure. It actually works EXTREMELY well. After Jordan asking a couple times for me to finish the song, I got into the quiet of the studio and was able to create this song! I’m really happy with how it turned out. For those of you that have listened to my first album, there’s a lot more songs about breakups and turmoil… I seem to be able to make a lot of these songs: not as appropriate when you’re engaged. This song came through really easy and it said JUST what I wanted it to. Then Ariel came into the studio and knocked my socks off. If you can believe it, when he’s playing in this video, he’d only played through the song about 4 times. I so appreciate musicians that take my music and turn it into their own, and that’s exactly what he did. So, I hope you really enjoy it. I can’t wait to hear what the ideas Jordan has for it, and be able to show it to you!

Katherine Penfold & Don Amero – I Belong to You

I had only heard Don perform once, but if any of you have heard his music, you’ll know you only need to hear it once before you’re completely hooked. He’s an incredible talent and wonderful person; I’m so glad I got a chance to work with him while I was in Winnipeg.

Sometimes when you come together with other songwriters you feel a connection, and sometimes you don’t. Its a little nerve-wracking before you get together because you always want the situation to be the best it can be. This one, to my excitement, was the best it could be. Time flew by and a song began to take shape. It changed stories a couple times but it settled on the wonderful love story you’ll hear in the recording, using some references from Don and his wife. (So cute). And we ended up with this song! I hope you enjoy it! We had such a blast; and Don, can’t wait to work with you again!

What an awesome week! (or 8 days). I am such a blessed woman being able to work with Brian James, Nathan Crook, Don Amero, Carl Strempler, Ariel Posen… all of these musicians are such incredible people to work with and have supporting a project. At the beginning the week I was pretty nervous about getting this whole project “started”. So much had already got going what with Carl Strempler and his wonderful wife, Evelyn, coming out to song write for a long weekend, but there is always so much to do when you begin an album. This is (officially) my second time going through this process and I definitely feel a lot more prepared for everything going on, but I hope these nerves and excitement never leave, no matter how many albums I put out! The plan began a couple months ago when we decided to write for months and then come out in January to record the whole album… as you can probably tell, we were very optimistic… haha! Only some minor changes: I song-wrote as much as I could, Carl comes out to get more ideas, and then we all go to the studio to put everything together; make sure we have the tunes we need to begin the process of creating our album. Over this last week we’ve changed a few other plans as well, like making the album a summer album and hopefully getting it in for the Juno’s in 2012. This means a lot of hard work to make sure our songs are exactly what we want to be making for you and releasing a couple months earlier than originally planned. I’m excited about this process we go through; I think it’s so incredible to be in the middle of it, especially when everything goes through such wonderful transformations.

Its back to work, writing as many songs as I can for this album. Even though I’m back in BC. I don’t know who wouldn’t want to be writing songs by the ocean . I seem to have my Zoom H1 recorder with me everywhere I go. I can’t wait to share with you these singles we’ve created. Jordan just sent me the pre-final of Butterfly, a tune Nathan Crook and I wrote a couple years ago. I’m so pumped we’ve finally used this song as its been sitting in the “pile” for a while and it is really a special song that I love singing. I’ll keep you updated!

I want to thank all the people that were involved with the time in Winnipeg: like Carl, Jordan, Luke, Don, Ariel, Brian, Nathan… did I mention Carl? That guy does so much to help make this music happen. Him, Jordan and Luke are just the best guys to have supporting a girl in her career. I can’t forget our wonderful friends Colin and Jenna who house us every time we’re in town. Thank you, everyone.

Katherine Penfold has made her mark on many stages across Canada over the last number of years with her breathtaking sense of tone and expression. With her second album just released, Katherine’s work is rocketing world-wide thanks to a renewed presence in the online music world.

She became somewhat of a Central Plains music staple performing at venues from Brandon to Winnipeg for years, when she was just a teenager. Her love of music drove her to study at Brandon University, and she has since set out to express her original material through Pop, R&B, and Jazz.

Katherine worked closely with Winnipeg jazz greats Walle Larsson, and Ron Paley to put together the show that would become her latest live album, Live At The Park. It was recorded at the Park Theatre in Winnipeg’s South Osbourne area, with renowned producer Jordan Jackiew at the helm. Hear songs from that album, and learn more of Katherine’s time away from music on Made in Manitoba this weeked. The interview digs into some important issues for Kat, whose recent career renewal came as a result that time spent in self-reflection.
